Lymphedema Products: Compression Garments for Medical Therapy and Sports

Discomfort and swelling caused by lymphedema can get in the way of proper movement and sports performance. Wearing the right medical compression garments could help with your treatment and reduce the swelling. These are specially designed products that you can comfortably wear for hours to prevent fluid buildup in your tissues.

Letting stagnant fluid build up in your body can make your lymphedema debilitating, so it makes sense to invest in the right products to manage your condition. You should be able to find exactly what you need—from custom garments and socks to compression sleeves—at Lymphedema Products.

How compression garments work

Lymphedema is a chronic condition caused by a problem with localized lymphatic drainage, but it can be manageable with proper intervention and treatment. Physicians typically address lymphedema by recommending high-quality medical compression garments. The right type of garments to wear will depend on your condition and the cause of the swelling. For instance, compression sleeves may be recommended to patients with arm swelling related to breast cancer. Those who have swelling around the feet, ankles, and legs will have to wear compression stockings or socks.

Graduated compression-wear garments help the body in encouraging lymph fluids to move from affected tissues’ interstitial spaces and go back to the lymph vessels, so they can circulate back to the heart. Compression garments can achieve that by squeezing those tissues and putting pressure on the fluids to facilitate their return to the vessels. Graduated compression is where the garment squeezes the tissues much tighter far from your heart and less tightly nearer the heart to encourage lymph drainage.

Medical compression garments apply external pressure, which is critical to controlling the discomfort, pain, and swelling associated with lymphedema. That said, it is not enough that you buy and wear just about any compression garment. You need to follow your doctor’s instructions on how often, where, and when to wear them. Moreover, you need to practice proper skincare, as continuously wearing these garments for long periods of time could cause the skin on affected areas to become fragile, thin, and at risk of cracking, drying, and flaking.

More benefits

Compression sleeves and other garments naturally enhance lymphatic function. They manually stimulate your body’s lymphatic drainage as you move, so natural fluid movement is supported. This is why they are ideal for those with functioning but low-capacity lymphatic systems.

For people with highly limited lymphatic function, traditional medical compression garments may suffice. The compression can prevent the advancing of swelling. Moreover, if you require custom garments or you won’t be moving much, traditional garments may be best for you.

  11. I am going on vacation to a resort. Before lymphedema, I would have worn a bathing suit all day. What am I supposed to do when I have lymphedema in the chest & am supposed to be wearing a compression bra for 23 hours a day? I have not been able to find any medical rated compression swimwear. I understand that compression is not needed when immersed in the pool but I’d like a compression bathing suit to use while lounging pool side.
