Your Swelling Pattern May Have Changed

Lymphedema and other forms of edema do not always remain perfectly stable.

Heat, prolonged sitting or standing, travel, illness, infection, medication changes, activity changes, weight changes, and inconsistent compression can affect limb volume. A stocking that worked well several months ago may feel different today.

The garment itself also changes. Elastic fibers gradually lose their ability to recover, and a worn stocking may slip, wrinkle, or provide uneven support.

If the swelling above your stocking is new, compare it with your usual pattern rather than assuming it is a normal part of compression wear. Your therapist or fitter may need to remeasure the leg, inspect the garment, and review the full compression plan.

Can Compression Stockings Make Swelling Worse?

A properly selected and fitted stocking should help manage the condition for which it was prescribed. However, an unsuitable length, incorrect size, rolled edge, poor application, or incomplete coverage can contribute to concentrated pressure or leave swelling uncontrolled in an uncovered area.

That is why swelling above the stocking deserves attention.

It does not automatically mean compression is wrong for you.
